Our desktop apps are sold through two separate channels:

Apple’s Mac App Store. Mac App Store apps fall under Apple’s Terms & Conditions, and are licensed directly through the individual user’s Mac App Store account. A license key is not issued for Mac App Store purchases, as the apps are registered using the iTunes Apple ID used to purchase the app.

While there is some crossover with the App Store’s licensing terms and our own, the intent of this article is to provide general information about Omni software license keys purchased outside of the Mac App Store. Omni Store licenses fall under the terms and conditions of Omni’s End User License Agreement.

Omni apps are licensed for either a given number of computers or people, whichever number is smaller. For example, one person with both a laptop and a desktop computer (or, a home computer and an office computer) can legally install and use a single-seat license on both Macs. Or, one lab computer shared by multiple different users needs only a single license of the software to cover all the separate users accessing the licensed app on that one Mac.

It’s important to understand that our licenses are not floating licenses. For instance, a business with twenty people needing to use the software across thirty computers would need to purchase twenty licenses. Even if no more than ten people will ever use the software simultaneously, twenty licenses would be required, as there would be twenty users accessing the licensed software on twenty or more computers.

The Mac App Store allows me to install a single license on up to five Macs for my own use. Does my Omni license allow the same?

We have applied Mac App Store-inspired limits to our Omni Store licenses to better accommodate single users who have more than one computer. Like the Mac App Store, a single-seat license purchased through our store can be used on multiple Macs by a single individual for personal use.

The Mac App Store offers Family Sharing. Does Omni allow me to share my single-seat license with my family members?

In the same way we’ve adapted our single-seat licenses to better accommodate individual users, we are also providing better licensing options for family members living in the same household. While we are not able to precisely match Apple’s Family Sharing plan, a single-seat license purchased from us may be used by direct family members living within that same household only. It’s important to note that this exception is not for business use, and doing so would be in violation of our licensing terms.

Our latest apps no longer require a license key!

In June 2020, we introduced an Omni Accounts login-based unlocking method for all of our latest applications. New purchases now automatically register your license to your account, and earlier purchases can be registered to an account for easier license management. Refer to our article Unlocking our apps with your Omni Account if you are running OmniFocus 3.9, OmniGraffle 7.17, OmniOutliner 5.7, or OmniPlan 4.0 and later.

All Omni applications purchased prior to June 2020 from our online store or any other location outside of the Mac App Store utilize a license key to fully unlock the app. This applies to the following versions of our apps:

OmniFocus for Mac 3.8.1 and earlier
OmniGraffle for Mac 7.16 and earlier
OmniOutliner for Mac 5.6.1 and earlier
OmniPlan for Mac 3.14.2 and earlier

If you’re using an older app, or are trying to locate an existing license to register with your Omni Account, your licensing details can be re-sent to you using our automated license retrieval tool. If you purchased the application using our online store, visit the Lost Licenses page and enter the information that page asks for.
